Peru: Huaraz against global warming

Huaraz has grown rapidly in recent years and its growing population occupies areas considered at risk because of its proximity to mountains that are in the process of melting and the lakes that rest upon them. For his new mayor, Vladimir Meza Villareal, begin measures to help mitigate global warming.

One is the Callejon de Huaylas afforestation by planting 150 000 trees from mid-February, work to be complete in six months. Meza reported that the project is progressing through the production of the nursery by the commune, where there are already 20 000 plants ready to place in the city. In this space of 700 hectares is to initially produce about 200 thousand plants in 2011, but the plan is to double the amount every year, with the aim of reforesting much of the Callejon de Huaylas. RECYCLING

Reforestation goes hand in hand from another project, the raising and collection of organic and inorganic waste, which is to promote the culture of cleaning Huaracina population through campaigns and awards to neighbors.

Armando Barrantes The city manager said they are picking up the garbage pickers at the moment about 200, to collect the waste inorganic and lead to a municipality acquires land for storing and collecting recyclables. "The issue is that not lead to different sides as it does now, but a single site. In a year we buy machinery, and presses, to help, "the mayor said.

also said the district staff will talk to the villagers so that, in their homes, separating the organic and inorganic waste and deliver both cars to collectors and recyclers. The inorganic waste will be deposited into the treatment plant of the municipality to produce compost, which will serve the commune plants placed in the following years.
